How to Play a Word Search
A word search is simple to start: look at the list of hidden words, scan the letter grid, and mark each word when you find it. The challenge comes from words that run in different directions and from the many letters that are included only to make the puzzle harder.
1. Read the word list first
Take a moment to look through all of the words before you begin. Notice short words, repeated letters, and unusual starting or ending letters. This gives your brain a rough idea of what it is looking for when you begin scanning the grid.
2. Start with an easy target
Short words or words with uncommon letter combinations are often the quickest to find. Early successes also make the grid less crowded and help you become familiar with the puzzle's layout.
3. Scan in more than one direction
Depending on the difficulty, words may run left to right, top to bottom, diagonally, or backward. Do not scan only across the rows. Check columns and diagonals as well, especially when a word seems impossible to find.
4. Use the first and last letters
If a word begins with an uncommon letter, scan the grid for that letter and test the surrounding directions. Another useful approach is to search for the last letter and work backward. Switching methods can help when you get stuck.
5. Mark each word clearly
On WordsMaze, click and drag across the letters to select a word. On a printed puzzle, circle or underline the word. Clear marking prevents you from searching the same area repeatedly.
Choosing a difficulty
- Easy: A 10×10 grid with 8–10 words. A good starting point for younger solvers or a quick break.
- Medium: A 15×15 grid with 12–15 words and a broader mix of placements.
- Hard: A 20×20 grid with 18–20 words. Best for longer sessions and experienced word-search fans.
How to print a puzzle
Generate the puzzle you want, then use the Print button. The print view is designed to create a clean worksheet with the grid and word list, without requiring an account or special app.
When you get stuck
Take a short break or change your scanning strategy. You can also move to another word and return later with fresh eyes. If you are solving on WordsMaze, the Show Solution option is available when you want to check a difficult puzzle.
